I recently returned from a two-month excursion in Europe and while abroad managed to fit in a few days at Andorra- a tiny country with large touristic appeal for anybody who appreciates manicured natural landscapes, the joy of skiing and the peace of mind of this wholesome, quiet life. Perched within the Pyrenees mountain range, Andorra surprises and pleasures.
Listed below are 5 facts of Andorra and some of the Pictures I captured:
Though the Euro is still the official currency of the country andorra is not part of the European Union. In fact its official title is Principat d’Andorra and also the Principality of Andorra.
The Prime Minister formally heads the country at a representative system where a General Council is responsible for legislation. The President of France and the Bishop of Urgell (Spain) serve as co-princes into the country. Military protection is also extended into by the part of Andorra’s neighboring countries.
The Great Outdoors
Andorra does not have its own army Spain and France shield it using their own militaries. The official language of Andorra is Catalan- a language of Latin origin that’s spoken during Catalonia, Spain.
Andorra is a small country with a region of approximately 181 square miles and a population of approximately 66,000 individuals. The country is sectioned into parishes, where you will find just 7: Sant Julia de Loria, Ordina and Andorra La Vella, Canillo, Encamp La Massana. Andorra La Vella is the maximum capital city in Europe in an elevation of 3,350 feet!
Because of its geographic location (wedged between Spain and France) Andorra has adopted cooking traditions from both these countries but has still managed to grow and maintain a few of its own, special recipes. Pork, cured meats such as the lloganiza sausage, canelones (baked stuffed crepes,) lamb and foi gras are food things common across most of Andorra’s eateries.
Favorites such as designs and quiche lorraine such as crema Catalana are also widely available.
It is not a significant wine producer because Andorra’s climate is largely cold and moist. Customarily, reds and French kinds out of La Rioja, Spain are all served.
A must-do for any traveler headed to Andorra would be to consume at one of the bordas at La Massana. Bordas are restaurants that serve Andorran cuisine plus they are not shy about just how much beef is on this menu. I had a carnivorous feast fit for a king in Borda de l’Avi. The restaurant specializes in mountain food rabbit, chicken, steak, and poultry.
Huge numbers of people flock to Andorra every year to ski from late October. Andorra boasts lots of ski hotels, tourist flats and lodges to accommodate beginners and ski pros . There is an extensive variety of slopes, which makes it an especially family ski destination. Andorra’s economy is based greatly on its tourism business, which is quality and hospitality driven. Spas and boutique hotels help to soothe achy legs after a very long day. Horseback riding is another favorite activity during the warmer months.
Horse farms and cattle are typical during Andorra.
The Art Hotel in Andorra La Vella is only one place where luxury and client service is the standard.
CALDEA is a large spa complex that provides every sort of pampering treatment under the sun. It has bathrooms at different temperatures, a sauna, steam room, and hydro pub. The complex is set in a modern building only a short walk in the center of Andorra La Vella.
Medieval cities such as Pal scatter the landscape along the main road.
Andorra’s independence from the E.U. allows it to become a tax haven. There’s not any income tax in Andorra and to the lavish things for sale at Andorra’s exclusive boutiques and outlet stores, tourists are attracted such as moths to a flame. There is designer tag merchant on almost every block and a sports equipment shop.
So there you have 5 interesting facts about Andorra. What’s lacks in size it constitutes jaw-dropping views of snow capped mountains and scenes of rivers that are rolling. So the next time you are contemplating visiting Colorado, Lake Tahoe or the Alps, you may want to appear in an Andorran ski vacation. It is one that may surprise you…
